Colominic acid is a homopolymer composed of α (2-8)-linked N-acetyl-D-neuraminic acid residues. In this application, colominic acid was analyzed using OHpak SB-804 HQ, an aqueous SEC (GFC) column. Water and basic aqueous solution were used as the eluent. Although a normal distribution chromatogram was obtained under the condition of basic aqueous solution, a part of colominic acid eluted at the exclusion volume due to ionic interaction between the packing material under the condition of water. The basic aqueous solution may suppress the ionic interactions between the sample and the packing material in the analysis of acidic polymer such as colominic acid.
