Question Actually i think i was misunderstood a little bit. I wanted to know if the ion exchange columns would get “clogged” with samples that contained organics such as fatty acids and alcohols. Since they are polymeric i would suspect that they would retain organic molecules by sort of a reversed phase mechanism via the polymer backbone which holds the quaternary ammonium group etc.     Answer As you mentioned, a base materials of IC columns retain hydrophobic solutes by hydrophobic interaction. However, we think fatty acids or alcohols having long chain are not soluble into the eluent conditions for anion analysis separation. Such insoluble compounds must be removed before the injection. And if these hydrophobic solutes are retained strongly, it is possible to improve the elution with adding some organic solution like acetonitrile or methanol into the eluent for offset the hydrophobic interaction as same as reversed phase analysis. So we think such hydrophobic solutes dissolved into the eluent cannot be the cause of clogging.     Additional Comments
