Question

I am looking for a Shodex equivalent to the Bio-Rad Aminex HPX-87H column for the analysis of glycerol.
I see Shodex applications using SP0810 and SH1011, but I am unsure whether these are direct equivalents.

Answer

The Bio-Rad Aminex HPX-87H column is a ligand exchange / ion exclusion column in the H⁺ form, commonly used for the analysis of organic acids, alcohols, and other small polar compounds, including glycerol.

Shodex SH1011 is the most appropriate Shodex equivalent to Aminex HPX-87H.

  • SH1011 is based on a sulfonated polystyrene–divinylbenzene resin
  • The functional group is sulfo (–SO₃⁻) with H⁺ as the counter ion
  • This makes SH1011 an H⁺-type ligand exchange / ion exclusion column, operating under the same separation mechanism as HPX-87H

Because both columns are in the H⁺ form, they exhibit similar selectivity for glycerol, organic acids, and small saccharides under acidic aqueous conditions.

Relevant Shodex Applications Using SH1011:

These applications demonstrate the use of SH1011 for small polyols, saccharides, and organic acids, consistent with typical Aminex HPX-87H workflows.

Although SP0810 is sometimes used for neutral sugar analysis, it is a Pb²⁺-type ligand exchange column and operates under a different interaction mechanism.
