Question
Mead Johnson is starting to set up the CH-ACH analysis on our DE-413/ACH-494 columns and their EHS people are not happy about the use of Tetramethylammonium chloride in the mobile phase. Apparently it’s environmentally hazardous.

Does Shodex have any suggestions for an alternate compound that will work.

Answer
It is necessary to add ion-pair reagent to make ACH/CH separated on the DE-413 column.
I’m wondering if they can use tetramethylammonium sulfate or tetramethylammonium hydrogen sulfate instead, which are still irritants but not categorized as toxic..
…but environmental impact…I don’t really think it is going to be so much different from the chloride salt.
