Question
SP0810 performance

Answer
Here is the link for the manual
Column SP0810. You can find “ restauration of column performance” on page 16 of the manual.

Things to consider about SP 0810:

Often biomass (wood etc.) is broken down to saccharides using sulfuric acid. Since SP0810 is a Pb2+
modified ligand exchange column, presence of H+ can remove the modified Pb2+ and/or deteriolate the
column performance. Thus, the sample containing acid cannot be directly injected to SP0810 column.

Some use alkaline solvent to neutralize the sample. Often used solvent is calcium carbonate. However Ca2+
may also replace Pb2+, again this sample should not be injected directly.

Therefore, any cation present in the sample need to be removed prior to the column injection.
One way to do this to use ion-exchange type Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) method.

The other way is to use pre-column that has capacity to remove ions. NREL method recommends
use of Biorad H+/CO3- deashing guard column. This guard column can be used with Shodex SP0810 column.

I will communicate to our technical support for further assitands, and let me know if you need more
Information.
