Question
A customer of ours (from Univ of WA), is purchasing an HPLC (with UV and RID) . He wants to run two different assays on these (see below), and he wants to buy columns asap (due to budgetary issues).

The analyses he is targeting are:

HPLC1: Glycerol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycols, butane alcohols, propanol (products of catalytic hydrogenation)
HPLC2: Sugars and sugar degradation products (furfural, hydroxyl methyl furfural, gluconic acid, saccharinic acids)

Answer
>HPLC1: Glycerol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycols, butane alcohols,
>propanol (products of catalytic hydrogenation)
I can see this could be a little challenging separation…

We have an application using SC1211 to separate glycerol, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol using H2O/ACN=60/40.

We have another application showing the separation of other alcohols with the same SC1211 column but with different mobile phase: H2O.

The separation of all compounds could be possible by optimizing the mobile phase (ratio of ACN and H2O), but this could take a time and I’m sorry I cannot say for sure if baseline separation of all can be possible. I think SC1211 has most potential.

Also if they need to separate isomers of butanol, most likely it will require different method.

I believe this is the application that you sent:
http://shodex.net/index.php?seitenid=1&applic=1355
Showing good separation of furfural and hydroxylmethyl furfural (5HMF).
I think gluconic acid and saccharinic acid should be separated using ion-exclusion mode.

Citric acid and pyruvic acid are another dicarboxylic acid like saccharinic acid.
