Reducing Run Time for Corn Syrup Sugar Analysis with Shodex Columns

Record: 802

Category: Column Selection
Product: KS, VG
Sample: Corn Syrup

Question
A customer analyzing corn syrup currently has a 15-minute run time at 80 °C. They would like to shorten this to ~5 minutes while still resolving DP2–DP4 peaks. Could a smaller particle size Shodex column help?

Answer
Reducing to a true 5-minute run is unlikely without losing resolution of DP2–DP4. However, shorter runs (~8–10 minutes) are possible depending on method priorities:

  • SEC Option: A single KS-801 column can bring run times closer to 10 minutes, though DP3 and DP4 may not baseline-separate. Example: Sugar Alcohols (KS-801).
  • HILIC Option: VG-25 4D can also achieve ~8–10 minute gradients for sugars with good DP2–DP4 resolution. Example: VG-25 4D.

Since the best choice depends on the sample, detection, and whether full DP resolution is critical, we encourage customers to email us with details of their experiment for tailored guidance.
