Question

A customer is currently using Shodex OHpak SB-805 and would like to expand the analysis range down to approximately 2,000 Da. Is there a suitable Shodex column recommendation?

Answer

Yes. To extend the lower molecular-weight analysis range toward approximately 2,000 Da, Shodex OHpak SB-802.5 HQ is the most appropriate primary recommendation.

SB-802.5 HQ is designed for low-molecular-weight SEC analysis and provides improved resolution in the ~500–10,000 Da range when measured with pullulan standards in aqueous eluents. Compared with SB-805, which is optimized for high-molecular-weight polymers, SB-802.5 offers significantly better sensitivity and separation in the low-MW region, making it well suited for extending analysis down to ~2,000 Da.

When samples span a broader molecular-weight distribution or include higher-MW components in addition to low-MW species, Shodex OHpak SB-803 HQ may be considered as an alternative. SB-803 provides wider MW coverage while still offering access to the low-MW region, although its resolution around ~2,000 Da is lower than that of SB-802.5.

Final column selection depends on the solvent system (aqueous vs. organic), polymer type, and the full molecular-weight range of the sample. If the analysis is performed in organic solvents such as DMF or involves PEG/PEO-type polymers, the applicable calibration range may differ and should be confirmed.
