Category: Column Selection
Product: KF-800 and DE-413
Sample: Polymers and organic acids

Question

We are purchasing a new HPLC–GPC system and need a GPC column for polymers and a column for small-molecule analyses.

Our requirements include:

  • GPC: polymers with molecular weights from 1 k Da – 500 k Da, analyzed in THF or chloroform, with some branching.
  • HPLC: small molecules such as citric acid and pharmaceutical compounds like doxorubicin.

Which Shodex columns would you recommend?

Answer

The KF-800 series is designed for organic GPC using cross-linked polystyrene–divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) gel, shipped in THF.

  • KF-803L + KF-805L (or KF-803 + KF-805) deliver broad coverage from 1 k Da to 500 k Da, ideal for linear and slightly branched polymers in THF or chloroform.
  • Fully compatible with THF, chloroform, toluene, and DMF, these columns provide robust performance and excellent resolution for standard polymer analysis.
  • To ensure consistent results, dedicate one column per solvent and use a KF-G 4A guard column for added protection.

For HPLC analysis of small molecules, the Shodex DE-413 column is a polymer-based reversed-phase column suitable for both organic acids (e.g., citric acid) and aromatic pharmaceuticals (e.g., doxorubicin) under typical aqueous–organic mobile phases.
