Question

A customer is looking for a GPC column suitable for analytes with molecular weight below 10 kDa. What Shodex column would you recommend?

Answer

For gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis of compounds with molecular weight below approximately 10 kDa, column selection is primarily determined by the required solvent system rather than molecular-weight range alone.

Shodex offers small-pore GPC columns in the 802.5 series that are suitable for low–molecular-weight analysis:

  • KF-802.5 is designed for GPC analysis using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the mobile phase.
  • KD-802.5 is designed for GPC analysis using dimethylformamide (DMF) and other compatible polar organic solvents.

Both columns provide effective separation in the low–molecular-weight region and are commonly used for oligomers and low–molecular-weight polymers when operated under appropriate GPC conditions with refractive-index or other compatible detectors.

Final column selection should be based on sample solubility, solvent compatibility, and detector requirements. For tailored column recommendations, please contact support@shodexhplc.com with your sample and solvent details.
