Shodex Column Recommendation for Sodium Ibandronate (IC Analysis)

Record: 693

Category: Column Selection
Product: I-524A
Sample: Sodium Ibandronate

Question

A customer needs to analyze Sodium Ibandronate and found a reference method using an Allsep Anion (150 × 4.6 mm) anion-exchange column. Which Shodex column is suitable for this compound?

Answer

Shodex has validated ion-chromatography methods for Sodium Ibandronate using the IC I-524A column. I-524A is a polymer-based anion-exchange column designed for highly polar anionic species, including bisphosphonate drugs such as ibandronate. Because bisphosphonates contain multiple phosphonate groups and exhibit strong anionic character, anion-exchange chromatography is the most appropriate mechanism, and I-524A offers the retention and selectivity required for this class of compounds. The Allsep Anion column is also a methacrylate-based strong anion exchanger with quaternary ammonium groups, so its separation mechanism is closely aligned with Shodex I-524A. For this reason, I-524A is the appropriate Shodex equivalent.

Shodex provides two applications demonstrating ibandronate separation directly on I-524A, including a method aligned with the USP Pharmacopeial Forum proposal:

These studies confirm that I-524A is the appropriate Shodex equivalent to the Allsep Anion column.

To support method transfer or optimization, it is helpful to confirm the customer’s detection method, required sensitivity, and whether they must follow USP conditions. For additional assistance, please contact support@shodexhplc.com.
