Ion Chromatography Considerations for Tellurite and Tellurate Analysis

Question

A customer is developing an ion chromatography (IC) method for an inorganic mixture that may contain tellurite (TeO₃²⁻) and/or tellurate (TeO₄²⁻). The current method uses an IonPac AS18 (4 × 250 mm) column with 26 mM KOH eluent, suppressed conductivity detection, and a 30-minute run time. However, neither tellurite nor tellurate standards are detected. Do you have a Shodex column or method recommendation?

Answer

At this time, Shodex does not have application data or a validated IC method for the detection of tellurite or tellurate ions. These oxyanions are known to be challenging to analyze by suppressed conductivity IC due to low molar conductivity, weak retention, and sensitivity to eluent chemistry and oxidation state.

The lack of detection observed with a hydroxide-based IC system is not uncommon and may be related to the intrinsic properties of tellurium oxyanions rather than the specific column used. Changing columns alone may not resolve the issue without addressing factors such as analyte stability, eluent composition, and detection sensitivity.

Shodex does not currently offer an application-supported IC column for tellurite or tellurate analysis. While exploratory evaluation of polymer-based anion-exchange columns with alternative eluent systems may be attempted, successful detection is not guaranteed and will depend strongly on eluent chemistry, oxidation state control, and detection mode.

Successful analysis of tellurite and tellurate may require:

  • Careful control of oxidation state during sample preparation
  • Evaluation of alternative eluents or detection techniques beyond suppressed conductivity
  • Consideration of non-IC analytical approaches depending on sensitivity requirements

If further details about the sample matrix, concentration range, and analytical goals become available, Shodex Technical Support can review whether exploratory method development is feasible at support@shodexhplc.com.
