Ion chromatography

Record: 357

Category: Column Selection
Product: IC
Sample: Na, NH4, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Ni

Question
analyzing Na, ammonium, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Ni in 50%MeOH/EOH. CD detector. what will be the best column?

Answer
First of all, the alcohol contained in the sample will not affect the packing gel, this is true for all of our ion chromatography columns.

For the separation, transition metals and other cations will probably not be able to be separated simultaneously.
As I mentioned before, YK-421 is not suitable for the transition metal analysis.

Ni and Zn can be separated by YS-50, but with different method from other cations.

However, in this example for transition metal, it was found that the Ni peak was due to the counter metal ion of nitrate. I do not think this is a case for you, but if your sample contains nitrate, we rather recommend T-521 for Ni and Zn analysis using

The method above uses post-column detection, however the mobile phase is suitable for CD.
**Some CD are not suitable for the mobile phase used here, since it creates high baseline signal outside of its working range. Thus this needs to be checked beforehand.
