iron analysis question

Record: 157

Category: Column Selection
Product: IC T-521
Sample: Fe(II)/Fe(III)

Question
One of our distributors in Colombia has a customer doing tap water analysis and they need to differentiate between Fe+2 and Fe+3 Your app note for transition metals uses the T-521 column with a post column reagent and UV detector: http://www.shodex.com/english/dc070402.html

In one of our applications books from Japan they use a sulfone-type IC column with a conductivity detector (attached). Do you think the T-521 column would work with the lactic acid mobile phase and conductivity detector? I think they have the same functional group on the column.

The Shim-pack columns and guard columns are pretty expensive, and the customer would have to also by an additional pump for the post-column reagent, so if they can use just the CDD and your column, it would be a nice cost savings for the customer.

Answer
Regarding the question, there’s probably a mistake in the application you attached.. I think this application also used Vis detector. As it shows the wavelength and post-column reagent.. So Lactic acid mobile may work (sorry we do not have an application..) but I don’t think CD will work in this case.
I do recommend IC T-521 for Fe(II)/Fe(III) separation, but looks like they have to have other equipment to go with it.
