Question
A customer is interested in the Shodex KF series for organic GPC analysis. They are analyzing compounds in the 50,000–100,000 Da range and also have smaller impurities. They do not need exact molecular weight information for the smaller impurities, but would like some general information about them.

What is the difference between KF regular type columns and KF columns with L or M suffixes?

Answer
For organic GPC analysis of compounds in the 50,000–100,000 Da range, Shodex GPC KF-804 is typically the recommended starting point. KF-804 is designed for organic SEC/GPC in THF and has a target polystyrene molecular weight range of approximately 7,000–300,000 Da, making it suitable for the customer’s main molecular weight range.

The regular KF columns, such as KF-803, KF-804, and KF-805, are single-pore-size columns selected based on the expected molecular weight range of the sample. These columns generally provide good resolution within their intended range.

KF columns with an “L” suffix, such as KF-804L, are linear-type columns designed to cover a wider molecular weight range than the regular type. KF-804L has a broader target molecular weight range of approximately 100–300,000 Da, which may be useful when the sample contains both the main polymer peak and lower molecular weight impurities.

KF columns with an “M” suffix are mixed-gel columns designed for broad molecular weight distributions. They are useful when the sample molecular weight distribution is very wide or not well defined.

For this customer’s stated range, KF-804 is the best first choice if the main goal is accurate analysis of the 50,000–100,000 Da components. If the smaller impurities are important and broader coverage is desired, KF-804L may also be considered. However, if the impurities are only being monitored qualitatively and exact molecular weight information is not required, KF-804 alone may be sufficient.
