Question
The University of Mexico is looking for both preparative and analytical columns for protein analysis. Which Shodex columns should be recommended?

Answer
For analytical protein separations, we recommend the Shodex OHpak KW-804 column. It provides high-resolution aqueous size-exclusion chromatography (SEC/GFC) for proteins, peptides, antibodies, and enzymes under neutral buffer conditions.

The preparative version (KW-2004, 20 mm I.D. × 300 mm) previously offered the same chemistry with higher loading capacity but has been discontinued.

For users needing higher sample loads, we suggest either:

• Performing repeated or parallel KW-804 injections, or
• Using an alternate Shodex SEC series (such as SB or LB columns) that supports preparative-scale analysis, noting that selectivity may differ.

The preparative KW-2002.5 was discontinued after 2024.
