Question
A customer is currently using a Merck LiChrospher RP-Select B column and is looking for a Shodex equivalent. What column can be recommended?

Answer
Merck LiChrospher RP-Select B is a silica-based reversed phase column with C8-type hydrophobicity. It is commonly used for reversed phase separations of basic, neutral, and acidic compounds.

Shodex does not offer a direct equivalent to LiChrospher RP-Select B. If the method requires C8/RP-8 selectivity, a direct replacement may not be available from Shodex.

Shodex C18 columns may be considered only as alternative starting points for general reversed phase separations if exact RP-Select B selectivity is not required. However, retention and elution order may differ because RP-Select B has C8-like hydrophobicity, a small pore size, and lower carbon load than many C18 columns. Shodex C18 columns may show stronger retention for hydrophobic compounds.

Method adjustments may be required when transferring from LiChrospher RP-Select B to a Shodex C18 column. For more tailored recommendations, please contact Shodex technical support with details on the target analytes, sample matrix, mobile phase conditions, and current separation challenges.
