Question

Do you have a recommendation for the analysis of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

Answer

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a low–molecular-weight, highly polar compound, and its chromatographic behavior depends strongly on the surrounding matrix and detector. While Shodex does not currently have a dedicated MSM application note, there are several reasonable column approaches that may be evaluated depending on the analytical goal.

As a starting point, MSM analysis may be evaluated using polymer-based reversed-phase ODP-50 4E, DE-413, or HILIC NH2P-50 4E columns depending on sample matrix and detector. Final method selection should be confirmed experimentally. These columns can offer stable performance across a wide pH range and are often used as screening tools when silica-based reversed-phase columns show limited retention for polar analytes.

Alternatively, if retention on reversed-phase columns is insufficient, HILIC-based approaches may be evaluated, particularly when using high-organic mobile phases and detectors such as ELSD or MS. Mixed-mode or ion-exclusion strategies may also be considered if MSM must be separated from ionic or highly polar co-components.

Because MSM itself has limited chromophores, detector selection (RI, ELSD, or MS) will also play a key role in method feasibility.

Final column selection depends on:

  • What MSM is being separated from
  • Sample matrix (supplement, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, aqueous solution, etc.)
  • Detector type
  • Mobile-phase constraints

Providing these details will allow Shodex to recommend a more targeted starting method and reduce trial-and-error during method development.
