Question

Can Shodex GS series columns be used in mixed-mode (SEC + ionic interactions) to separate proteins or impurities with similar molecular weight?

Answer

Yes. Shodex GS series columns (GS-HQ family) combine size exclusion chromatography with secondary ionic interactions, which allows separation of compounds that have similar molecular weights but differ in conformation or charge.

The GS-520 HQ was historically used in protein recovery applications, but since it has been discontinued, the GS-320 HQ is the recommended alternative.

Resolution depends strongly on eluent conditions, so optimization of salt concentration and organic solvent content may be required.
