Category: Column Selection
Product: NH2P-40 3E
Sample: mono- and dicarboxylates

Question:
Which Shodex column is recommended for separating small mono- and dicarboxylates in LC–MS without using mineral acids or salts?

Answer:
Shodex offers options for small carboxylate and dicarboxylate analysis, depending on the detection method:

  • Organic acid analysis (non-MS):
The DE-413 column can be used for separating dicarboxylic acids.
    Application – Dicarboxylic Acids (DE-413)
However, this method uses non-volatile eluents and is not compatible with LC–MS.

  • LC–MS compatible analysis:
The NH2P-40 3E is recommended for LC–MS applications.

    • Mode: Polymer-based amino HILIC

    • Particle size: 3 µm, 4.6 mm I.D. × 250 mm

    • pH stability: 2–13

    • Mobile phases: Compatible with volatile eluents (e.g., acetonitrile/water with ammonium formate or ammonium acetate)

    • Provides good retention of polar organic acids without requiring non-volatile mineral acids or salts.

For LC–MS applications, use NH2P-40 3E. For general organic acid separations where MS compatibility is not required, DE-413 may be suitable.
