Question
A customer is looking for an equivalent to the Thermo Acclaim Mixed-Mode WAX-1 column for iodine (iodide) analysis by ion chromatography. Which Shodex column is recommended?

Answer
Shodex does not have a direct mixed-mode (WAX-type) equivalent to the Acclaim WAX-1, but iodide can be analyzed using Shodex anion-exchange IC columns for non-suppressor ion chromatography.

Recommended columns

  • NI-424(4.6 × 100 mm, 5 µm) – High-resolution, quaternary-ammonium anion-exchange column for sensitive iodide detection.

  • I-524A(4.6 × 100 mm, 12 µm) – Rugged, longer-life version that fulfills USP-NF L23; ideal for routine or high-matrix samples.

Both columns are non-suppressor type, based on polyhydroxy-methacrylate polymer material, and are compatible with phthalic-acid or 4-hydroxybenzoic-acid eluents commonly used in non-suppressor IC systems.

If LC/MS compatibility or mixed-mode selectivity is desired, the HILIC VT-50 2D column can also be evaluated; it provides partial ion-exchange retention suitable for iodide under MS-compatible conditions. Please see the related application here: LC/MS Analysis of Iodide – VT-50 2D (HILIC)

Summary

  • For iodide by standard IC (non-suppressor): use NI-424 or I-524A.

  • For LC-MS detection: use VT-50 2D (HILIC).
