Shodex Column Options for PEG 3350 Analysis by Aqueous SEC (RI Detection)

Record: 670

Category: Column Selection
Product: SB-802.5
Sample: PEG 3350

Question

A customer is looking for technical assistance with column selection and would like a Shodex column comparable to a Phenomenex aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC/GPC) column currently used for analysis of water-soluble polymers such as PEG.

Current method:

  • Mobile phase: 10% methanol / 90% water
  • Sample: PEG 3350
  • Detection: Refractive Index (RI)

Do you have a Shodex recommendation?

Answer

Yes. The referenced Phenomenex column is an aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC/GPC) column designed for analysis of water-soluble polymers such as PEG. Under the described conditions (90% water / 10% methanol with RI detection), Shodex OHpak SB-series columns provide appropriate functional equivalents.

In particular, OHpak SB-802.5 HQ and OHpak SB-803 HQ are polymer-based aqueous SEC columns commonly used for PEG analysis. Both columns are compatible with low levels of organic solvent and provide size-based separation suitable for PEG 3350.

Selection between SB-802.5 HQ and SB-803 HQ should be based on the desired molecular-weight separation range and resolution window, as the two columns differ in pore size and calibration behavior. Reviewing PEG calibration data can help determine which column is more appropriate for the target molecular weight.
