Question

A customer is using or considering Agilent PolarGel columns and would like to know whether Shodex offers an equivalent or alternative. What Shodex column can be recommended?

Answer
Agilent PolarGel columns are SEC/GPC columns designed for polar polymers using polar organic solvents or water/organic mixed eluents. They are not reversed phase columns.

Shodex Asahipak GF-HQ series columns may be considered as alternative starting points for similar multi-solvent SEC applications. The GF-HQ series is based on a polyvinyl alcohol polymer gel and can be used with both aqueous and organic eluents, including water, methanol, acetonitrile, THF, DMF, and up to 50% DMSO for selected columns.

However, GF-HQ columns are not direct equivalents to PolarGel columns. The exclusion limit and separation range may differ, so the customer’s target molecular weight range should be confirmed before selecting a column.

For lower molecular weight samples, GF-310 HQ may be suitable. For broader or higher molecular weight distributions, GF-510 HQ or GF-7M HQ may be considered. If the required molecular weight range is outside the GF-HQ range, Shodex OHpak SB series columns may also be considered for aqueous SEC methods.

For more tailored recommendations, please contact Shodex technical support with details on the polymer type, target molecular weight range, solvent system, sample matrix, and detector.
