Question

A customer is using a Viscotek 270 GPC system with mixed-bed ViscoGel columns for analysis of THF-soluble polymers such as polystyrene and acrylates. In some cases, their samples contain mixtures of polymers with different molecular weights that currently require purification by dialysis using MWCO membranes. They would like to evaluate a preparative GPC column that can be connected to their existing GPC system as an alternative to dialysis. Can Shodex help?

Answer

Yes. Preparative GPC can be an effective alternative to dialysis when separation is based primarily on molecular-weight differences between polymers of the same chemical type under THF-based conditions.

For THF-soluble polymers such as polystyrene and acrylates, Shodex offers THF-compatible preparative GPC columns based on styrene–divinylbenzene polymer packings. These columns allow fractionation by size exclusion and can be used on GPC systems equipped for preparative flow rates and fraction collection.

As an example, the Shodex GPC KF-2000 or KF-5000 preparative series can be considered, depending on the desired sample load and molecular-weight range. These preparative columns correspond to analytical KF-series pore sizes and are designed for use with THF eluents.

The feasibility and effectiveness of preparative GPC depend strongly on:

• The molecular-weight range of the target polymer
• The molecular-weight range of species to be removed
• Whether the target and impurity are chemically similar polymers
• The required sample load and purity of collected fractions

If the molecular-weight distributions significantly overlap, preparative GPC may provide limited resolution, and multiple runs or complementary purification approaches may be required.

  Preparative-scale columns corresponding to analytical KF pore sizes, suitable for moderate sample loads using THF.
