Question
We are having problems with pressure on our SB columns. We have struggled with this problem since receiving our these columns. The booklet indicates that the max pressure for SB-806, 805, and 804 is 3.0 MPa. We wish to connect these columns in series with a guard column preceding. However, with only the SB-805 column the pressure reaches about 2.7 MPa at only 0.4 ml/min flow rate. Adding more columns only allows us to run at a max of 0.2 ml/min. A max pressure of 3.0 MPa seems very low. Is this correct? Wajira indicated that he routinely runs about 7 MPa without problem. Any suggestions?

Answer
I’m assuming you are including the system pressure.. 3 MPa is only for the max pressure of 1 column. Please monitor your pressure without column. So if the pressure of “with column” minus “without column” is less than 3 MPa, you are fine. The max pressure for 3 columns will be 9 MPa as well. If this is not the case, please let us know.
