Question
I would like to investigate mixtures of haloacetic acids (mono, di and tri) and see if there are any impurites in them such as chloral. I believe that the column to use is RSPAK JJ-50 2D. I have an Agilent LC/MS.

Answer
The lab in Japan does not have a data for chloral analysis. However, they think by optimizing the pH of the eluent and the conc. of ACN should be able to separate your target and chloral.

Since Chloral is not a carboxylic acid, it will require using reversed phase mode instead of ion exchange mode. This means it will probably need less ACN and elutes before trichloroacetic acid. If chloral overlaps with mono or di chloroacetic acid, then you may try to change the eluent pH to neutral ~ acidic, this will increase the elution time of haloacetic acids. You may also try a gradient method.
