Question
Addition of chloride will not damage the packed material, but the presence of chloride, especially at acidic condition, may cause rusting of the column housing. This is the reason we do not recommend to add chloride. However, as long as you clean the column with solvent without salt after the usage, it should not be a problem. We would recommend you to rinse the column well especially if you are not going to use the column for a while after chloride use.

Answer
We currently used size exclusion chromatography columns OHpak SB-800 HQ series for polysaccharides.

For our experiments we used acetic mobile phase at pH=4.5 with 0.15M of acetic acid, 0.1M sodium acetate and 0.4 mM of sodium azide.
We want to add 0.1M of NaCl in our mobile phase but I read on your standard operation procedure (No. 1141-3) that chloride ion must be avoid for mobile phase with pH below 6. What kind of problem will append if we used chloride ion in our mobile phase?
