Column Selection for Saccharin and Sodium Cyclamate Analysis

Record: 634

Category: Column Selection
Product: NH2P-50 2D
Sample: Saccharin and Sodium Cyclamate

Question

A customer is analyzing saccharin and sodium cyclamate and is currently using a Waters Spherisorb S5 SAX (25 cm, 5 µm) column with a phosphate mobile phase at ambient temperature. Do you have a Shodex column recommendation?

Answer

Saccharin and sodium cyclamate are highly polar sweeteners, and their analysis is commonly performed using anion-exchange or HILIC-based chromatographic approaches. While Shodex does not offer a direct silica-based strong anion-exchange (SAX) equivalent to the Waters Spherisorb S5 SAX column, Shodex application data demonstrate that amino HILIC columns can be successfully used for sweetener analysis under aqueous–organic conditions.

Based on available application data, the Shodex NH2P series is a suitable option for evaluating saccharin and sodium cyclamate. NH2P columns are polymer-based amino HILIC columns designed for polar and ionic compounds and offer robust performance without requiring strongly alkaline mobile phases. This makes them a practical alternative when transitioning away from traditional SAX methods.

Additional Comments

Please note that the NH2P-40 2D column used in the application above has been discontinued. For current evaluations, Shodex NH2P-50 2D is the recommended alternative within the NH2P series and offers similar amino HILIC selectivity.

Final column selection and method conditions depend on factors such as mobile-phase composition, buffer type, detector, and regulatory requirements. To provide a more tailored recommendation, please contact Shodex Technical Support with details of the existing method and analytical goals at support@shodexhplc.com.
