Shodex Column or Precolumn Recommendation for Isomalt (Ca²⁺ Ligand Exchange)

Record: 815

Category: Column Selection
Product: SC1011
Sample: isomalt

Question
A customer needs a precolumn (30 mm × 4.6 mm I.D.), strong cation-exchange resin (Ca²⁺ form, ~9 µm) for isomalt analysis. Which Shodex product is recommended?

Answer
Shodex does not offer a 4.6 mm I.D. Ca²⁺ precolumn, but for isomalt (Palatinit®) analysis, the recommended analytical column is the SUGAR SC1011 (8.0 × 300 mm, 6 µm, Ca²⁺ form).

  • Mode: Ligand exchange and size exclusion

  • USP classification: L19 (Ca²⁺-form cation-exchange resin)

  • Typical eluent: Water at 80 °C

  • Applications: Quantitative analysis of isomalt and other sugar alcohols (e.g., maltitol, sorbitol, mannitol)

For protection, use the SUGAR SC-G 6B (6.0 × 50 mm) guard column.
If a smaller I.D. format is required, system adaptation to 8.0 mm is recommended, as Shodex does not manufacture Ca²⁺ columns in 4.6 mm I.D. format.
