Question
I don’t think we have had any contact before but Ron Benson gave me your details previously.

I am the Product Manager for Viscotek GPC products from Malvern Instruments. We OEM a range of columns from you.

I was actually trying to find out whether your bulk molecular weight standards (which we also supply) are NIST traceable. One of our distributors was asking (specifically about SM-105). Do you happen to know. I couldn’t see that information in the catalog.

Answer
Our standards are shipped with a certificate of analysis explaining the lot number, as well as, Mn, Mw, Mp and Mw/Mn for each molecular weight standard in the kit.

However, the CoA does not include a standard deviation or coefficient of variation which makes me think that the standards are not NIST traceable. In addition, the standards are prepared in Japan and would most likely comply with the Japanese equivalent of NIST which I think is JISC (Japanese Industrial Standards Committee).

I will forward your inquiry to the technical support in Japan for confirmation, but I highly doubt that the standards are NIST traceable.

Additional Comments
Asked Wakayama-san: I apologize for the delay in response.

Our technical support in Japan has provided an answer. They have confirmed that the analytical instrument used for the calculation of Shodex polystyrene and PMMA standards are NIST traceable.

The analysis procedure for measuring the parameters of the PS and PMMA standards are NIST traceable, although the individual standard polymers are not confirmed by NIST traceability.

I hope this information will help.
