Question
What is the recommended cleaning procedure for KS-801 columns?

Answer

For the Shodex SUGAR KS-801 column, cleaning and regeneration are recommended when peak shapes deteriorate, elution times shift, or column pressure increases.

According to the Operation Manual:

Cleaning (for insoluble deposits):

  • Reverse the flow direction (introduce eluent from the outlet side).

  • Use a flow rate less than half of the recommended operating flow rate.

  • Collect the effluent directly to waste (do not pass through detector).

Regeneration (for loss of Na⁺ counter ions):

  • Set column temperature to 50 °C.

  • Flow rate: 0.5 mL/min.

  • Introduce one of the following:

    • Method 1: 50 mL of 0.2 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution → flush thoroughly with water.

    • Method 2: Flow water at 0.5 mL/min → inject 40 µL of 1 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution several times → flush thoroughly with water.

⚠ Important Notes:

  • Do not connect the detector during regeneration; collect effluent directly to waste.

  • Always flush thoroughly with water after using sodium hydroxide.

  • Never allow the column to dry.

These steps help restore KS-801 performance when fouling or counter-ion exchange has occurred.
