Question
What is the difference between the SB series and LB series SEC columns?

Answer

Both the SB-800 HQ series and LB-800 series are polymer-based aqueous SEC (GFC) columns, but they are optimized for slightly different purposes:

  • SB-800 HQ series

    • Designed for general aqueous SEC of water-soluble polymers.

    • Wide molecular weight coverage (up to ~5×10⁸ Da with SB-807 HQ).

    • Suitable for routine applications where broad distribution or very high MW polymers need to be analyzed.

    • Example: SB-807 HQ is specifically intended for ultra-high MW polymers, with large gel particles to prevent shear degradation.

  • LB-800 series

    • Also designed for aqueous SEC, but with very low column bleeding, making it ideal for light scattering detection (MALS, DLS).

    • Offers cleaner baselines, especially important when detecting low-MW components.

    • Same pore size lineup as SB-802.5 through LB-806M, but no LB-807 equivalent.

Additional Comments

  • Choose SB-series for general aqueous SEC, calibration work, and ultra-high MW polymers (including SB-807 HQ).

  • Choose LB-series when using light scattering detectors or when minimizing baseline noise is critical.
