Question
Is SB-807 HQ the best column to analyze hyaluronic acid (HA)?

Answer

SB-807 HQ (8.0 mm I.D. × 300 mm, styrene-divinylbenzene, mixed gel, SEC/GFC) is frequently used for hyaluronic acid (HA) because its large pore size accommodates very high molecular weight species (~10⁴–10⁶ Da). Whether it is the best choice depends on the sample and analytical goals:

  • Broad or very high MW HA: SB-807 HQ is suitable when analyzing samples with very large molecules or wide molecular weight distributions.

  • Mid- or lower-range HA: Columns such as SB-806M or SB-805 HQ can provide better resolution for smaller species.

  • Sample purity: If the HA sample is a single molecular weight fraction, a smaller pore size column may give sharper separation. For mixtures or crude samples, combining two columns in series (e.g., SB-807 HQ with SB-806M) can improve separation across a wider MW range.

Additional Comments
SB-807 HQ is recommended when the target is high MW hyaluronic acid or samples with a broad distribution. For narrower distributions or lower MW HA, other SB-series columns (SB-805 HQ, SB-806M) may provide more suitable resolution.
