Question

A customer needs a USP L34 column (100 × 7.8 mm) for sorbitol. USP recommends the Aminex Fast Carbohydrate column. Is Shodex SP0810 available in this size, or is there another suggestion?

Answer

Shodex now offers a short version of SP0810: the SUGAR SP0810-8C (8.0 × 100 mm, Pb²⁺).
This column uses the same stationary phase as the standard SP0810 (8.0 × 300 mm) and qualifies as USP L34, making it suitable for sorbitol analysis with a significantly shorter run time.

• For strict USP L34 compliance:

  • Use SP0810-8C (8.0 × 100 mm) for faster runs or SP0810 (8.0 × 300 mm) for higher resolution.

  • Refer to the application Analysis of Sorbitol according to USP–NF Method (SP0810-8C).

• If USP flexibility allows:

  • NH2P-50 4E (4.6 × 250 mm, 5 µm) or NH2P-50 4D (4.6 × 150 mm, 5 µm) provide even faster HILIC-mode analyses under ACN/H₂O conditions (see Analysis of Sorbitol in Nicardipine Hydrochloride Injection (NH2P-50 4E)).
