Shodex Column Recommendations for Chlorite/Chlorate Temperature Effects and Paraquat–Diquat Analysis

Record: 686

Category: Column Selection
Product: SI-52 4E and ES-502C 7C
Sample: chlorite/chlorate, bromide/bromate, and Paraquat and Diquat

Question
A customer asked about two topics related to Shodex ion-exchange columns:

  1. Temperature effects on SI-52 4E:
They want to know whether operating the Shodex IC SI-52 4E column at room temperature will affect the separation of chlorite/chlorate or bromide/bromate. They referenced Shodex temperature-dependence data and want confirmation that ambient-temperature operation is acceptable.
  2. Paraquat and diquat analysis:
They also want to know which Shodex column is recommended for the analysis of paraquat and diquat, and whether Shodex has an ion-exchange option validated for these quaternary ammonium herbicides.

Answer

1. Temperature Effects on SI-52 4E for Oxyhalide Analysis

The SI-52 4E application shows that temperature affects each oxyhalide pair differently, and the optimal temperature depends on the specific ions being measured.

According to the Shodex data:

  • Bromide (Br–) and chlorate (ClO3–)
→ Well separated at 45 °C or higher
→ Elevated temperature improves resolution for this pair.

  • Chlorite (ClO2–) and bromate (BrO3–)
→ Resolution improves at lower temperatures
→ Lowering the temperature gives better peak separation for this pair.

Application: Influence of Temperature on Retention Time (SI-52 4E)

Unlike many oxyhalide methods where a single temperature works universally, SI-52 4E shows pair-dependent temperature behavior:

  • Use higher temperatures when the focus is Br– / ClO3–.

  • Use lower temperatures when the focus is ClO2– / BrO3–.

Method development may require balancing these conditions depending on which analyte pair requires the most critical resolution.

2. Paraquat and Diquat Analysis

For paraquat and diquat, Shodex recommends the weak anion-exchange column:

Asahipak ES-502C 7C

This column provides reliable ion-exchange retention for quaternary ammonium herbicides and is validated in Shodex’s application data.

Application: Paraquat and Diquat – Asahipak ES-502C 7C

If the customer has not yet used ion-exchange chromatography for these analytes, ES-502C 7C is an appropriate starting point and offers clear, well-resolved peaks for both compounds.
