Question
I am from Phenomenex and one of our customers is using your SI-90 4E column. He had a question about compatibility with his sample. He will be making a 100 uL injection of 25% glycol (I didn’t ask whether it is propylene or ethylene glycol). He wants to make sure that it won’t damage the column in any way. Is it fine for him to make an injection of this solution?

Answer
Glycol (neither propylene nor ethylene glycol) will not cause damage to the column.
However, we are concerned of its high viscosity (since it is very concentrated).
It may increase column back pressure. Since it is very viscous, it may interfere with the “smooth flow” that also may cause delay in components’ elution.
Therefore, we would recommend the customer to dilute the sample as much as possible. Another advice is to slower the flow rate, in order to reduce the influence from the viscous eluent.
