Question
I just started using the YS-50 column for a method to resolve and quantify copper, iron, and other transition metals utilizing unsuppressed conductivity. I am following application 454 from your website for YS-50. Attached are some chromatograms. I have prepared the eluent using ACS grade tartaric and oxalic acid. I have been using copper sulfate and cobalt sulfate as standard analytes. I am not sure why there is a peak before the water dip and then a negative peak at about 5 minutes? I am not sure why there isn’t a cobalt peak, or any positive peaks after the water dip? I have also tried running copper, which is the analyte I am most interested in, to the same result. The peak before the water dip and the negative peak are directly related to concentration. Please help.

Answer
Which conductivity detector are you using?
Does it have a setting option for polarity?

I am wondering if the detector polarity setting is reversed.
i.e., the positive peak you are currently observing might be the water dip as it seems not be influenced by the concentration of the sample. And the peak coming around 2 min might be the copper, also after 5 min could be the cobalt peak.

Would you please check your detector setting?
If this resolves the problem, please let me know it.
