Shodex Cation IC Alternative for DMEA in 0.9% NaCl (IonPac CS12A / IC-Pak Replacement)

Record: 804

Category: Column Selection
Product: YK-421 and YS-50
Sample: DMEA

Question
Customer analyzes DMEA (dimethylethanolamine) for FCH QC using IonPac CS12A (4 × 250 mm) and Waters IC-Pak 03657 with 5 mM HCl. Matrix is 0.9% NaCl. They want an equivalent that improves separation while keeping similar retention. Suggestions?

Answer
Recommend Shodex YS-50 (cation IC, polymer-based). It provides robust amine separations and tolerates high-salt matrices; Na⁺ elutes earlier than ammonium and most alkanolamines, so DMEA resolves away from the saline front.

While YS-50 is not a 1:1 direct equivalent to the IonPac CS12A or Waters IC-Pak (both silica-based), it offers comparable cation-exchange performance and typically maintains similar retention with minor re-optimization (acid strength, flow, or temperature). The polymer base also provides greater chemical robustness and longer column life in chloride-rich matrices.

Typical eluent (starting point): 2–5 mM methanesulfonic acid (MSA) or dilute mineral acid; 0.8–1.0 mL/min; 30–40 °C.
Order (general): Na⁺ < NH₄⁺ < monoamines (MEA, DMEA, choline) < polyamines.

If silica-type selectivity is specifically desired, YK-421 is a closer match in stationary-phase character, but YS-50 remains the broader-use, more durable choice for routine QC applications.

For a tailored method (flow/acid strength/temperature to match current retention), have them email us at support@shodexhplc.com with their exact setup (matrix, detector, target RT window, acceptance criteria).
