Question
A customer is currently using an Agilent ZORBAX Phenyl column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) and is looking for a Shodex equivalent. What column can be recommended?

Answer
Shodex does not currently offer a direct equivalent to a conventional phenyl-phase reversed phase column such as the Agilent ZORBAX Phenyl series.

Phenyl columns provide unique selectivity for aromatic compounds through π-π interactions and hydrophobic retention. Because selectivity can vary significantly depending on the analytes and mobile phase conditions, selection of an alternative column depends on the specific application.

In some cases, polymer-based reversed phase columns such as Asahipak ODP-50 4E may be considered as an alternative starting point for hydrophobic or aromatic compounds. However, retention and selectivity may differ from a true phenyl phase, and method adjustments would likely be required.

For more tailored recommendations, please contact Shodex technical support at support@shodexhplc.com with details on:

  • target analytes
  • sample matrix
  • mobile phase conditions
  • current separation challenges

This information is important for determining whether a suitable alternative column is available.
